about the event

Read by the River, an educational fair promoting the importance of early childhood literacy, will be held on March 30, 2008 from noon to 3:30pm in Cousens Gym (Click for directions) at Tufts University. The 9th annual literacy celebration has been in the planning stages since September 2007.

This year, more than 600 kids will be treated to musical and comical performances and will have the opportunity to engage in reading circles, get their faces painted, create a mural, and pick up a free book donated from local bookstores and Tufts students. You can even receive a free movie pass, donated by National Amusements, if you bring a completed book report form to the event. We invite all Medford students in grades K - 5 to attend the event.

Read by the River is more than an opportunity to bring the students of Medford together for an afternoon celebration. It is a chance for the students and their parents to engage in literacy activities, which show them how to incorporate reading into their everyday lives. This unique celebration draws Medford students into the world of literacy while forming bonds between more than 200 Tufts students and the local community. More than 600 Medford school children and over 200 Tufts students are expected at the festivities.

The Literacy Club, Medford Public Schools
Our volunteers visit the Medford Public Schools to assist kids with their classroom work. Volunteers are matched with a small group of children with whom they work on class assignments and literacy skills. With this format, each volunteer is given the opportunity to form meaningful personal relationships with the children and has the freedom to assess on an individual basis which teaching methods would be most approporiate, effective, and fun. Improving and promoting literacy is our ultimate goal, but as much as we're teachers, we're also role models and friends.
